A peaceful winter trip near Rovaniemi
Are you craving a winter trip outside the city? On the Pikkurompa trail, you can slow down the pace, enjoy the peace of the forest, and explore Lapland's nature at your own speed.
Located about 20 kilometres from the centre of Rovaniemi, this trail of approximately five kilometres is suitable for independent winter hiking. Pack warm drinks, choose gear suitable for the snow conditions, and allow enough time to enjoy the scenery.
What is the trail like?
The Pikkurompa trail is mostly flat, with an elevation gain of about 30 metres. In suitable conditions, it is also a good option for beginners and families familiar with winter outdoor activities.
However, a short and flat route does not always mean an easy winter walk. Deep or soft snow can slow down progress and make the trip more strenuous than usual. Check the conditions before heading out and plan the trip according to the fitness level of your group.
Approximately halfway along the route is a lean-to shelter (kota), which provides a natural place for a break. Bring snacks and a warm drink, stop for a moment, and enjoy the silence of the surrounding forest.
Starting point and trail map
The trail's starting point and parking area are located about 20 kilometres from the centre of Rovaniemi. Plan your travel in advance and check the accessibility of the parking area, especially after snowfall.

Familiarise yourself with the route before setting off and also save the map for offline use. Do not rely solely on a mobile connection for navigation.
Choose gear suitable for the snow conditions
Suitable equipment depends on the snow situation. In deep or soft snow, snowshoes or sliding snowshoes can make progress easier. If you are not sure which option would suit your trip and experience better, ask us before you leave.

From Get Arctic, you can rent snowshoes, sliding snowshoes, and winter hiking equipment. Headlamps and first-aid kits are also available for rent. We are happy to help you choose the right gear for your trip.
Safely on the winter trail
Plan the trip according to daylight hours. Lapland's winter days are short, so check the daylight hours and allow enough time for the return journey before dark. Pack a headlamp, even if you plan to return in daylight.
Dress in layers. Choose warm clothing and an outer layer that protects against wind and snow. Take extra warm clothing for breaks, as the body cools down quickly when stationary.
Tell someone about your plans. Inform a friend, your host, or the accommodation staff where you are going and when you intend to return.
Keep your phone charged and warm. Keep your phone inside your jacket to save the battery. Save the route map for offline use and, if possible, bring a power bank.
Pack the essentials. Snacks, a warm drink, and a first-aid kit are basic equipment for a winter trip. The lean-to shelter is a nice place to take a break, but do not rely on it to keep you warm or assume that a fire will be ready for you.
Stay on the trail and turn back if necessary. Snow can cover the path, and conditions can change. If following the route becomes uncertain or the trip feels more strenuous than expected, turning back is a sensible decision.
Experience Lapland at your own pace
An independent trip can be a memorable way to explore Lapland's nature without booking a guided tour, provided that the route and conditions match your experience.
