Kuninkaanlaavu

Winter hike to the Ounasjoki river landscapes near Rovaniemi

Are you craving the peace of the forest and open river views near Rovaniemi? The Kuninkaanlaavu lean-to shelter, located in the direction of Santavaara, offers a great spot for a break during a self-guided winter hike.

The starting point for the route is located about eight kilometers from the center of Rovaniemi. It is about 2.8 kilometers from the starting point to the lean-to, and by returning via a slightly different path, the total distance will be about five kilometers. Pack snacks and a warm drink, and allow time to enjoy the scenery.

What is the route like?

The route has an elevation gain of about 100 meters. In winter, the difficulty of the hike is particularly affected by the amount of snow, the condition of the trail, and potential slipperiness. Progress in soft snow can be slow, and the climbs may feel more strenuous than usual.

The route is not marked in the terrain. It is suitable for a self-guided hike if you know how to follow a map and navigate in winter conditions as well. A trail leading to the lean-to can be found on the Retkikartta map, but snow can hide it from view. Do not rely solely on tracks left by others.

You can return to the starting point via a slightly different path. Plan the entire route in advance and choose your return route according to conditions and your own energy levels.

A break in the Ounasjoki landscapes

The Kuninkaanlaavu shelter offers beautiful views of the Ounasjoki river. The shelter is a natural place to stop, enjoy snacks, and spend a moment in the peace of the wintry nature.

Pack extra layers for the break, as your body cools down quickly when you are stationary. Do not assume that there will be a fire ready at the shelter or that firewood will be available.

Starting point and route planning

The starting point is located about eight kilometers from the center of Rovaniemi.

Explore the terrain map also on Retkikartta and save your planned route for offline use before you leave. A map link to the starting point alone does not replace the trail map needed in the terrain.

Assess the safety of the parking area on-site. Do not park in a way that obstructs other traffic or road maintenance. If the parking at the starting point does not seem suitable, ask us for tips on alternative starting points or routes.

Equipment for a winter hike

Choose your equipment based on snow conditions and your own experience. In deep or soft snow, snowshoes or sliding snowshoes can make movement easier. Also consider the climbs and descents of the route when choosing your gear.

At Get Arctic, you can rent snowshoes, sliding snowshoes, and winter hiking equipment. We are happy to help you choose the right gear and provide practical tips for planning your trip.

Safely to the Kuninkaanlaavu shelter

Check the weather and daylight hours before you leave. Allow enough time for the hike and take a headlamp with you, even if you plan to return before dark.

Dress warmly and in layers. Protect yourself from the wind and snow, and pack extra clothing for breaks.

Bring a map, a charged phone, snacks, a warm drink, and a first aid kit. Keep your phone warm inside your jacket and make sure you know how to use your saved map without an internet connection.

Tell someone your route plan and estimated time of return. Since the route is unmarked, turn back in time if navigation becomes uncertain or conditions become too demanding.

Experience wintry Lapland at your own pace

Kuninkaanlaavu offers an opportunity to enjoy the nature of Lapland and the scenery of the Ounasjoki river without booking a guided tour, provided the route and conditions are suitable for your experience level.
